Pack Your Checked-in Bag Like a Pro

The checked-in bag is for you who are going on a longer trip, or who disagree with the concept “less is more,” and like to bring a lot. There are two real perks to bringing checked-in luggage; First, there are no restrictions when it comes to toiletries, and second, you can bring a lot more stuff. When packing a larger bag, start off by using the same foundation as when you pack a carry-on. Then, to make things even more interesting, we’ve added some extra tips as well, suitable for a longer trip with a larger bag.

Before you start packing…

  • Start off by making a packing list. To make things easier for you, we’ve already made a packing list for you! Check it out here. When using a packing list, you’re less likely to forget stuff at home.

  • Look up what the luggage restrictions and rules are for your specific airline and that specific route. Sometimes, airlines have different regulations for different routes.

  • Put a bow in a bright color on the handle of your suitcase for easy recognition.

  • Always take a picture of your travel documents and passport, in case they get lost.

  • Bring some local money in case they don’t take cards and let your bank know you’re traveling. Otherwise, chances are they might cancel your card thinking it got stolen.

  • Download a couple of movies and podcasts. Occasionally, you’ll get that last minute notice saying that your airplane broke down and that they’ll be leasing a plane from a different company you never heard of before, and of course, they don’t have screens. Been there, done that ;)

Let’s start packing!

  • ALWAYS place one day’s outfit and essential toiletries in your carry-on bag in case your checked-in bag gets lost on the way. Personally, we like to place the outfit in a packing cube. See the GIF above for inspiration.

  • Speaking of packing cubes… they’re perfect for any bag. They maximize space, prevent your clothes from getting wrinkly and allow you to easily move your clothes from your suitcase to the hotel wardrobe and back to the suitcase.

  • We suggest planning your outfits in advance and then placing one day’s full outfit in one separate packing cube. If you’re going on a three-day trip, that means your three outfits can be planned in advance and packed in three different cubes. Also, by mixing and matching different pieces and by using them for more than one outfit, you can get away by packing less.

  • Never put valuable stuff like jewelry or electronics in your checked-in bag. Despite having a lock on your bag, the risk of your things being stolen is still high, unfortunately.

  • Pick out what you think you’ll need and cut it in half. When you get back from your trip, it’s a good idea to review your packing list again and think about which clothes you actually used. Maybe there are things you didn’t use that you can leave at home on your next trip?

  • Bring a laundry bag for your dirty clothes. It’s so nice and easy to fill upp a laundry bag and then dumping it out in your washing machine when you’re back home. It’ll also prevent the rest of your stuff from getting dirty. Also, if going on a longer trip, bring some portable laundry detergent so that you can hand-wash your clothes if needed.

  • Roll your clothes and wear your heaviest clothes while traveling.

  • Pack your toiletries in separate, waterproof cases in case they leak. One time, before using Bag-all’s toiletry cases, my nail polishes leaked in my bag and ruined three bikinis. Since then, cases that can be zipped up and that holds potential liquids is a must!

  • Place your toothbrush and toothpaste in a separate Toothbrush Case for an easy access during your trip. By keeping your toothbrush in a separate case, it’ll stay nice and clean while allowing you to find it at your convenience if needed.

  • Bring a small tote for beach days and shopping sprees! We recommend a foldable tote. Also, don’t forget to leave some room for shopping!

  • Finish off by placing a dryer sheet in your suitcase! This will allow your clothes and bag to smell fresh throughout your trip, despite airplane cargos, humid climates, and hotel closets.
